Who’s Got Next 2011

Who’s Got Next 2011
SET2

Set2’s sound is big. Over the top but still fighting for his spot, he’s warring for your ear. Unapologetically blunt, he got a lot to say and even more ways to say it. Somewhere between a charismatic color commentator, an insightful poet and crowd moving master of ceremonies – there’s Set2 and his microphone. He chomps on beats and rides his own rhythm. He conveys intelligent wittiness powered by his ‘nothing to lose’ attitude. Headstrong yet reflective, he raps like it’s his last – his last minute on the mic, his last second on the stage, his last record on the radio. And it’s been on the back of this fearless authenticity that Set2’s garnered startling acclaim in just a short time. Set2’s big.

The Toronto native shook up the scene in 2006, immediately securing medium rotation on Canada’s #1 radio station with his debut single “Oh Yea” featuring Rochester. It was a swift move into regional recognition, but one Set wanted since he’d seen Busta Rhymes perform as a teenager.

“I realized the energy that music could create with people,” says Set2 thinking back. “I was watching guys in the neighbourhood try their music thing too, but when I saw my first live show the depth that was possible in music really hit me. I could move people, I could make them laugh, I could make them want the feeling I was having watching Busta. So I started rapping.”

Set gained considerable recognition over the next few years. He quickly released a mixtape called Ignorant Education, and set the college radio circuit ablaze making constant appearances on Toronto staples Project Bounce, Crack House Radio & Off Da Tracks. He even enlisted Canadian music veterans Jelleestone and Snow for the remix to his debut single “Oh Yea.”

Once again, his ‘now or never’ energy resonated with fans and fellow artists alike. Set started getting requests for features from other local artists and continued his buzz releasing his second mixtape Full Time Hustler Vol 1. Death of Wack Rap.The tape was hosted by heavyweights DJ Power & DJ Rock Da House giving him another set of credible co-signs.

Set2’s participated in live radio ciphers with some of Toronto’s best up and coming artists, appeared on several street DVDs and graced the stage at HipHopCanada’s Importfest, Drift Mania, Battle of the Beatmakers and OTA Live’s Megacity Countdown Launch party.

He also anchored a landmark mixtape in partnership with Hiphopcanada.com and proved he was a pioneer in soliciting fan participation in his creative process. Each week, users lobbed potential instrumentals at him. Each week, he produced a freestyle in response. And after a few months, the first ever HipHopCanada Presents: Artist Exclusive Set2 was released.

“Set2 took a big risk by letting our users choose which beats he’d rap on,” says Jesse Plunkett, HipHopCanada co-owner. “He came through though. I think he really feeds off his audience’s energy. This was a perfect example.”

With such an innovative viral marketing campaign in full swing, Set2 released “Boro Branded,” an ode to his area in the east end of Toronto called Scarborough. The song was immediately picked up by Flow 93.5 along with the college radio shows he’d built strong relationships with. Fellow Toronto artists began recording their own versions of the song which only served to heighten its popularity.

Set2 then took a self imposed hiatus, while also building his own home studio. His passion had grown too time-consuming for professional studio use, so he decided to take matters into his own hands. After the short hiatus, Set2 returned in 2009 releasing “Bom Bom,” returning to his ‘big sound.’ He secured digital distribution for the single through HipHopCanada Digital.

“What do I have to lose?” says Set2 defiantly. “Shoot, nobody expected me to make things happen like I did out the gate anyway. Now nobody should expect anything less to happen. This is the time to pay attention.”

Set2’s latest single is “Back On Da Scene.” Back like he never left.

JAY Z VS. DRAKE ~ You Decide

Tuesday, September 8 ~ 2009

"Last name Ever, 1st name Greatest". Who is this, Jay or Drake?
Jay-Z: ...Drake's up next, see what he does wid it. (A Star is Born)
Drake: I never cried when Pac died. But I probably will when Hov does. And if my tears hold value, then i would drop one for every single thing he showed us. (Fear)

Some say that this is between The Freemason vs. The Next Generation. Sagittarius vs. Scorpio
Some say it's the battle of North America, the winner gets (or retains) ownership of Alaska. These are the rumors we've been hearing.
And if that's not all, GSP has decided to be Drake's corner man, while Jay... what more can I say, Hova!

Today Sept. 8th: Jay-Z's Blueprint Moved Up To Tuesday Release (Buy on itunes)
The release date for Jay-Z's highly anticipated album The Blueprint 3 has been shuffled due to bootlegging and leaks on the Internet.

The new album will now be released this Tuesday (September 8) as opposed to the original date of Friday, September 11.

Over the past two week, songs from The Blueprint 3 - mainly those produced by Timbaland - landed on net.

More recently, the entire album was leaked, prompting Jay-Z to address the issue in an interview.

"I may be the most bootlegged artist in history," Jay-Z told MTV News during a press conference. "It’s a preview. I’m excited for people to hear the album. I’m very proud of the work I’ve done, so enjoy it."

Jay-Z's benefit concert supporting the New York Police and Fire Widows’ and Children’s Benefit Fund will continue as planned on September 11.

Drake goes under the knife for his ACL basketball injury, videos for Forever & Money to Blow being shot. Word is, the surgery has been successful. Colli is from Naptown, a town known more for its football team, racetrack and its corn, and is part of the super independent label 1 hundred ent that will have 20 mix tapes come out this quarter including one by Mr. Southern Smoke himself. S. Colli was recently featured in The Midwest Leak Magazine and has been networking and mixing it up with the biggest DJ’s in the game at the Core Dj Retreats – Atlanta, Houston, and Las Vegas in November. His debut single was picked up by super dj coalition the Hittmen Dj’s and his new single featured as a bonus track on Jay Z vs Drake has already confirmed that Murphy Lee, Field Mob, and Cap 1 are going to be on the remix. I mean come on with lyrics like these it’s no wonder S.Colli is being deemed the hottest artist in the Midwest period.

Breaking Records: Drake Edition 2 with Legion Music and Media & www.stopbeefinradio.com

A SPECIAL MESSAGE FROM DRAKE!

People often ask me the craziest part about becoming “famous” and I’ve never had an answer until yesterday.

“You’ll spend half of your time defending yourself and the other half trying to stay sane resulting in you being forced to find time to be creative”

I often wonder in a time where new artists exist in a impersonal cyber world of instantaneous information, if we will ever have another rap legend that can manage to maintain the image that our idols had prior to this method of promotion. I am not suggesting that this person should be me, I am just urging a generation to understand that in order to have anyone of any significance in our lives that we can look up to there will be things that we must look past. There are people that buy sell and trade evil on a daily basis…when u believe in their brand is when they win.

“Even photoshop couldn’t change me”
- Me

I also want fans to know that I am only releasing this EP so that everyone involved in the project can hold a physical copy of the CD in their hands and see it in the store. And for anybody else who feels that So Far Gone marked a moment in time I just wanted to give you the option to have the disc. If you got it for free and want to keep it that way than by all means I urge you too. That was a gift from me to you…Thank Me Later.

THE PRODUCER'S SHOWCASE CHALLENGE OFFICIAL REVIEW

Origionally posted @ The PRODUCER'S MANUAL

Approximately 300 people jammed into Downtown Kathy Brown's to witness New Industry Canada's, PRODUCER'S SHOWCASE CHALLENGE on NOV, 7TH.

I told you all it was "GONNA BE ONE DOPE ASS EVENT, DONT MISS IT!" I Told You! And it was.

The Performances

Bizz from crackhouse radio and livetheculture.com exclaimed, "Rich Kidd's performance... he crushed it!" "Point Blank was the most jovial and outgoing I've ever seen...I finally got a Point Blank t-shirt."

Yes, the performances were incredible that night!

New Industry's, Rugged One: Strik9 & Flex set the whole vibe of the show by opening the event with high energy and positive records, Rich Kidd & Junia-T did they thing for sure, letting Londoners know whats happening out in T-dot.

Judge, Mic Boogie: I was impressed alot by Rich Kidd. Didn't know he rapped. He was live. Got the crowd into it for sure.

Top indie group, Point Blank put on a solid performance as always and showed what they can do as a top Indie group in Canada. "They did like 6 songs," says Bizz, "including their singles!"

Okay, now for the main course. The Producer Battles.

Boogie: As far as the beats go. All the producers brought some dope beats. Some had more consistent production as they got into further rounds
...biggest surprise was Neenah. The only female in the whole contest.
Her first round beat was insane. It was probably the grimiest beat I heard all night. And she don't look like she makes beats like that. I had to spit a verse on it.

Rugged One: Our judges panel consisting of (heavy weight rapper) Mic Boogie, (T-dot's choice producer and now rapper) Rich Kidd, (champion rapper) D-Sisive and Londoner (and one of Canada's new favourite and respected rapper) Shad K.

Some of the highlight battles were the surprising first round outcome where C4 knocked out Contejous Management's, Vokab... and that was only the beginning for this explosive producer who took out Vokab without a single...sample.

Big Pops vs Memorecks was another memorable first rounder.

Boogie: ...Pops, from the first round he was just banger after banger.
Some guy rushed the stage and fell down (lol).

C4 was definitely very consistent from round to round. His beats were all dope. Nice heavy low end in his beats. I'm definitely going to work with him.

Those two matches set the tone for the night.

C4 went on to battle Contejous Management's, Neenah.
C4: ...next round was against Neenah. I knew that was going to be tough. For one, she's Vokab's girl so I knew she was going to try to take me out (like, you cant beat my man and me too).
So I dropped something different; that I felt would get people hyped....Next was J Staffz.

I asked judge Mic Boogie if he found the judges differ in scores; "or where you all pretty much in agreement during most battles?"

Boogie: We all had our own preference as for production style.

Any closely "scored" battles?

Boogie: Yeah, Big Pops and Black Ghost to go to the finals

The Finals, C4 vs. Big Pops ... 3 rounds ding ding!

C4 felt the first round against Pops was ruined.

C4: The sound guy played my beat at low volume and restarted it 3 times; it played for a total of 5 mins. That's not the way you take people by surprise.

*[Apparently, the sound guy "Ray" tried to pull a fast one by fucking with the levels until he was given an extra $100. WTF RAY!?!?! Contact Rugged One for details and to avoid this kinna bullshit at your event]*

C4: I think that Pops is great at what he does and I don't think he's responsible for what happened but I would like to see an uninterrupted final.

Boogie: As for C4, the only reason why he lost I would say was that Big Pops beats just had a bit more feeling and life in them. More emotion with how he chopped up his samples.
His beats were monsters...
all of them.

For the night each producer there seemed to have their own crews with them, but for sure Big Pops stole some peoples friends away.

The Event as a Whole

The Showcase was a great success. The Producers came with some of the most incredible production and the crowd response was a testament to that. A good place for artist to meet up with talented producers." Ultimately Big Pops' thunderous production styles dictated the outcome and had him crowned the grand champion of the evening. But that in no way takes away from the caliber of beats we heard all night from all the competitors," said producer Rugged One.

Boogie:Yeah for sure a good way to connect. I made some connects...

Legion: you mentioned working with a few of these producers in the future, anything peeps s/b looking forward to hearing soon?

Boogie: Well Im waiting on some beats from C4. I hit up Black Ghost about a beat he had I want to do something with. AND Big Pops... I could do a whole album with him.

More from Mic Boogie

C4: There's a lot of talent out here and I look forward to making hits for as many people as I can. I work with Jd Era quite a bit..i've done some remixes for Elephant Man and Akon in Toronto. Funny thing is; my day job is making jingles for commercials. I do hip hop for the love.

Congratulations to Big Pops, all the contestants and performers and Ruggerd One for hosting and putting it all together with New Industry.
